About me

This is me in panda form.

I'm Carrie: a 30 yo registered dietitian living in the deep south with 1 husband, 2 dogs, and 1 cat.

Professional
I had a weird path to nutrition. I graduated (the first time) with a degree in economics and business. I spent 2 hellish challenging years working as an accountant at a large telecom company. I was miserable-the job just did not suit my personality and was slowly crushing my will to live. Not to be over dramatic. I had planned to keep this job for 4 years while my husband went to med school. I realized I needed to make a change when I was legitimately jealous of how happy my husband was...as a med student. People, you should never feel jealous of a med student! He was passionate, enjoyed his subject matter, and knew that he was in the right place. I began to think about what I actually wanted to learn about and what I enjoyed reading about in my free time...and decided to go back to school to become an RD. I find nutrition as medicine incredibly interesting, and I wanted to be able to help people make changes that would benefit their health. I love talking to people (which is somewhat frowned upon when you are an accountant!) and I love figuring out how their diet could work to make them feel better. So I went back to school. I finished my Dietetic Internship in 2009 and finished my MS in Clinical Nutrition in 2010. I'm so glad I was able to make a complete career change. I love what I do now!

Personal
I met my husband in college (the first time) when we were both sophomores, and have been together ever since. We got married in 2003 and he started med school that same year. I can't really recommend doing both at the same time. It was just a little bit stressful and somewhat of a life change. A few years ago we up and moved to another state so he could do his residency in radiology. Yes, we are an incredibly nerdy couple. He has 1.5 more years of residency and 1 year of fellowship left and then he will be a real doctor! After a mere 10 years of post-graduate education. He's completely awesome and the absolute best person I know.

I'm starting this blog as a way to hopefully entertain, educate, and motivate others-and myself. I want it to be somewhat just talking about my own struggles of knowing how to eat right and be healthy...and yet not wanting to do those things. Discussion about misinformation or nutrition research. Healthy recipes that actually taste good. Real, practical issues. I feel like there are a lot of health/wellness blogs out there that focus very heavily on what that person ate each day or how many miles she ran--this is not that kind of blog. I'm definitely not knocking those blogs-they can be very informative and motivational! It just isn't me. I call my blog Confessions of a Dietitian because I definitely struggle and ignore all my education and eat brownies instead. I am unlikely to ever run a marathon, but I do still exercise. I am never going to be a vegan or a particularly great chef, but I do try to make good food choices. I am just trying to make healthier choices and encouraging others to do so also.
