boo

I came home to no wireless internet and only spotty regular. This annoys me greatly. M comes home tomorrow and then he has to deal with it! I tried the patented Reboot and Unplug Everything method, but it failed.

Can I just say I need to move to a bigger city? I ate eeeeverything this week. I mean anything and everything. I didn't run at all (though I probably wouldn't have since my leg is still bothering me. I guess I get to go back to PT.) I did 30DS twice (and was inordinately proud of myself even though I didn't have weights.) I didn't even think I walked that much...but I still lost a pound. I have no idea how, but I will take it.

ok, posting while I can.

MIA

Sorry I have been absent : ) I spent a lovely week in DC with M. I don't like to announce I'm going somewhere. I feel like someone is going to come rob my house and kidnap my dogs. I have been going going going all day every day, so I am way behind. You will soon be subjected to numerous pictures of monuments, cherry blossoms, and M and I being goobers.

RUNNERS. I NEED YOUR HELP!

So this might get a little long and pitiful, but please bear with me. I will try to do a Cliff's notes version.

--My body is totally effed up. It doesn't work right, isn't built right, and is all floppy. My ligaments don't hold me together, so my muscles try to do the job and then they both hurt.

--Specifically challenging: my kneecaps dislocate and don't have much cartilage. They don't bother me too much unless I'm doing like weighted lunges or sitting with them bent for long periods of time. Knees were my first problem and the first indicator my ligaments sucked. I d/l the first one in 4th grade. They have remained relatively stable for about 10 years (praise the Lord, though I would take the old knee stuff for my current crap.)

--My pelvis is...askew in numerous fun ways. One side tilts forward, the other backwards. If your pelvis is supposed to be a bowl, mine is more like a towel being wrung. One iliac crest is about an inch higher than the others and a leg length discrepancy is either the cause or the symptom, idk.

--My chief complaint is my SI joint. A tiny little joint where your sacrum connects with your pelvis. it should move just a bit. Mine is permanently posteriorly rotated. It is an evil whore. It is never going to not hurt for me. No trauma, no injury. Just started hurting 6 years ago and hasn't stopped. Again: evil whore.

So I've had, and this is not an exaggeration, probably 2-3 years worth of physical therapy in the past 6. I do my exercises to stabilize my pelvis, strengthen my core, blah blah blah. I do it. I stretch. I ice. I do my exercises. I manage. There is a magic spot b/t not enough activity and too much that I try to find daily.

I've been trying to safely work on running. This means "running" so slowly and for very short periods of time. I warm up. I stretch. I focus on each step. I even wear my dorky back brace. Usually the first half mile to mile hurts. I'm thinking about each step, feel it in my back/hip/pelvis and want to stop. If I can get past that, I usually feel pretty good. Sometimes it just doesn't wear off. Like tonight.

Anyway, frequently when I walk/run my front upper thigh-hip area starts to hurt. Like if you took a really long step forward, it would stretch the top of your back leg. Only every single time I lift my leg, it hurts like hell. That little muscle or tendon or whatever that you feel when you lift your leg...as in flex knee to chest/pull knee upwards. Huuuuurts.

I don't know if it is the iliopsoas or what. I'm leaning towards that as part of my hip flexors. My PT used to squish her fingers UNDERNEATH the little ledge created by your iliac crest. You want to talk about painful! I do know that my back muscles are too tight and my abs are too weak, so I do tend to kind of lean back on my pelvis or arch my back.

Usually I just stretch the crap out of it and it is generally ok. Lately, that hasn't been cutting it. Tonight I just couldn't. It felt fine all day and then it hurt so so badly when I tried to run. Like hobbling, limping, crying hurt. I quit and am currently icing the crap out of it while popping nsaids. I took yesterday completely off, so I don't know if I have to run daily for it not to hurt or what.

Anyone have any advice? I'm googling, but can't find anything definitive.

IF YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS, EXPERIENCE, HELP, OPINIONS, ETC PLEASE LET ME HAVE THEM. IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO HAS EXPERIENCE, PLEASE PLEASE SEND THEM MY WAY. IF ANYONE SUGGESTS SOMETHING THAT WORKS, I WILL SEND YOU A PRIZE FULL OF ALL GOOD THINGS, I PROMISE. SHORT OF GOING BACK TO PT, I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH IT.

Happy Dietitian Day!

Yeah, that's right. I have my own day ; )

I've got some great questions and I am looking forward to writing about the topics. Feel free to submit anything else...really at any time. I had a friend with an emergency this week, so it may be a few days on the questions. But it will happen!

Plus I want to talk about: 1) how awesome I'm getting at 30DS. And obvs how shredded I am after doing it 13 times (yes, I'm averaging like every other day. 60 Day Shred is more my speed.) I can feel I am getting a bit more muscle/strength in my arms and legs. 2) how I'm able to run faster and for longer than I have in a veeeeery long time. Basically, I'm amazing and an exercise machine. I'm pretty much Jillian Michaels' body double.

It is almost Dietitian Day

March 9th is National Dietitian Day!

From ADA: Registered Dietitian Day was created by the American Dietetic Association to increase the awareness of registered dietitians as the indispensable providers of food and nutrition services and to recognize RDs for their commitment to helping people enjoy healthy lives. Registered Dietitian Day and National Nutrition Month® promote ADA and RDs to the public and the media as the most valuable and credible source of timely, scientifically-based food and nutrition information.

So I thought we could do an Ask an RD Day here. Ask me anything and I will try to answer. Nutrition recommendations, research, questions about your intake, etc. Anything you want! If I don't know, I'll research it. You can leave me a comment or email me at confessionsofadietitian@gmail.com. I'll post answers this week!

Fun with Excel

You know what is nerdy? Spending like 20 mins building an Excel line graph for weight loss using both my actual weights and projected goal weights. But it is a pretty awesome graph, I'm just saying. And formatted in such a way that all I have to do is put in my daily values and it will plot it. It looks better than a lot of the online tools I have found!

This is pretty much my only scientific or former accountant type skill-fun with graphs and charts. Really, all visual representations of data.

I have more stuff to write about, but it will have to wait.

Its National Nutrition Month!

12 Ways to Enjoy More Fruits, Vegetables, Whole Grains and Dairy

1. Have fun using vegetables as pizza topping. Try broccoli, spinach, fresh basil, tomatoes, mushrooms, zucchini, and squash.

2. Mix up a breakfast smoothie with low-fat milk and any combination of frozen fruit: strawberries, blueberries, peaches, raspberries, pineapple, and a banana.

3. Make a veggie wrap with roasted vegetables and cheese rolled in a whole-wheat tortilla.

4. Try raw crunchy vegetables instead of chips with your favorite dip.

5. Grill colorful vegetable kabobs packed with tomatoes, green and red peppers, mushrooms, squash, zucchini,  and onions.

6. Stuff an omelet with vegetables. Turn an omelet into a meal with broccoli, squash, carrots, peppers, tomatoes or onions with cheddar cheese.

7. Sandwich in fruits and vegetables. Add pizzazz to sandwiches with sliced pineapple, apple, peppers, cucumbers and tomato as fillings.

8. Make a habit of adding fruit to your morning oatmeal, ready-to-eat cereal, yogurt or toaster waffle.

9. Top a baked potato with beans, salsa,  or broccoli and low-fat cheese.

11. Sneak in some vegetables. Add grated, shredded or chopped vegetables such as zucchini, spinach and carrots to lasagna, meat loaf, mashed potatoes, pasta sauce and rice dishes.

12. Make your main dish a salad of dark, leafy greens and other colorful vegetables, fruit, and nuts. Mandarin oranges, cranberries, blueberries are great on salads. Add some almonds or walnuts for extra healthy fats.

Yes, I know it is March 2 but I had a traumatizing  day yesterday b/t going to the dentist and then falling dramatically down my outside stairs onto the driveway. Let's just pretend yesterday didn't exist, shall we?

Hipster Ariel

This sums up my entire life and clothing philosophy

Am I right? Megan? Put the word 'Grandpa' in front of the word 'cardigan' and I will buy it for sure.

Woot!

Today's Living Social deal was $25/ classes at Pure Barre. I've been wanting to try this! It seems to be a combo of ballet techniques and pilates/core stuff. Basically all those tiny muscles you never know about until they hurt like hell. I wanted to buy a bunch (usually a class is about $20-$25. Steep, imo.) There was a gift option so I thought I would just make friends and family buy it for me! But I called and they said no, the purchaser has to use it. Thwarted, again.

UPDATE: It let me buy another one with a different email address! Uh oh! Plus there are two locations I can buy from. Y'all. I'm about to make them really regret this decision.

They also have a $100 unlimited month membership for new members which I could maybe make worthwhile. I may do that in a few months. I have a 2 week boot camp that I need to use as well. With the 2 wks they have a cheaper option to finish out the month. I'm waiting on the boot camp until April b/c I will be out of town some in March and you pay whether you go or not. Actually, I need to find out if it is a calendar month or just 4 straight weeks. Then maybe Pure barre. I don't think I can do both at the same time without dying. I'm looking forward to both!! Well, as much as one can look forward to something they know is going to hurt them and kick their ass. I love classes and totally need the motivation.

Boring post! Sorry. I'm planning on doing some more recipes/nutrition posts for National Nutrition Month! And a post of my new favorite things.
